The Thomas Coram Research Unit at the Institute of Education, University of London, undertook an international study to observe how people from different countries talk about and understand childcare. One of its themes was children's independence.

Partners in Denmark, Hungary and England were involved in the study, which was part of a six-country project, 'Care Work in Europe: Current Understandings and Future Directions', funded by the European Union. A video was made of 'everyday' life in a nursery in each country. Two workers were followed and a list of items was filmed, such as group activities, one-to-one time, personal care and meal time.
