Health of caregivers in childcare

This Australian study investigated carers working in formal daycare (ie, long day care: LDC) and family daycare (ie, childminding: FDC). Of LDC caregivers, 86 per cent had taken sick leave in the previous year and 75 per cent had taken leave for infectious illness; 22 per cent were cigarette smokers. Figures for carers in FDC were 24 per cent and 12 per cent; 8 per cent smoked. Areas of concern were stress, infectious illness and physical trauma such as lifting injuries.
