Hearing tests for Scottish babies

Babies born in Tayside are the first in Scotland to benefit from a national screening programme in which all infants have a hearing test in their first six weeks of life. The Newborn Hearing Screening service is based at maternity units in Perth Royal Infirmary and Ninewells Hospital, Dundee, and is backed up by clinics and home visits in Tayside and Angus.

Project manager Susan Campbell said, 'Research shows that in order for children to have the best chance of overcoming hearing problems they must be diagnosed as quickly as possible so that appropriate measures can be put into place early.'

In most cases, parents are offered the test before their baby leaves the hospital, cutting down on return visits, and allowing any potential problems to be spotted and treated as quickly as possible.
