Help childcarers as well as children

As an owner and manager of a private day nursery, I totally agree with everything that Marcelle Cunningham said in her letter ('Scrap the rates and reward the staff', 29 April), and with the other letters that have appeared in Nursery World on this subject in recent months. Recently I contacted the Government to put my point of view across, only to be fobbed off by being told that it subsidises childcare costs with the Working Tax Credit and the Child Tax Credit.

Well, the Government may subsidise childcare costs to parents, but this is not helping childcare establishments. We do not see any of this money, as it is paid directly to the parents and they decide what it gets spent on.

When it came to power in 1997, Labour promised new initiatives within the early years sector. But it has done nothing for the workers. Childcare workers do an exceptional job and need to be paid their worth, so let's all put pens to paper and bombard the Government with our views. You never know; if half of the childcare workers in Britain write, something just might get done.
