Hodge unveils details of light-touch approval plan

Early years organisations have broadly welcomed the Government's new 'light touch' registration process for nannies and home-based childcarers, but they are concerned that it is not consistent with other forms of childcare regulation across England.

Details of the voluntary Childcare Approval Scheme, the first to regulate home-based carers, were revealed by children's minister Margaret Hodge at a Sure Start conference in London last week.

From April, parents with the combined maximum income of 59,000 a year and two or more children will be able to claim up to 210 per week for the childcare element of the Working Tax Credit towards the cost of home-based childcare if their nanny or childcarer is registered with the Childcare Approval Scheme.

Nestor Primecare Services, a healthcare provider, has been appointed by the DfES as the approval body for the scheme. Its 300 offices across England will handle the administration and a helpline that went live last week.
