Jean described her award as 'a tremendous tribute to Early Education and the work done by the charity over many years'. She said, 'The pioneers of good practice in early childhood education showed that working well with children and their families was best achieved by reflecting on their work, learning from others and from research.'

Pat Wills, national chair of Early Education, paid tribute to her colleague. She said, 'We're absolutely thrilled as an association because this not only recognises the work Jean does but also Early Education. It puts the stamp on a lifetime of service. The quality of Jean's work is phenomenal. She quietly works behind the scenes with the DfES and is such an advocate for the early years.'

Jean is currently recovering from hip replacement surgery.

'We have brilliant practice in this country but it needs to shine like a beacon. Over recent years this has been seen by decision-makers and I have been privileged to be involved in promoting the best.'
