Human rights champion

Scotland has come a step closer to giving children their own human rights champion after a Bill to establish a Commissioner for Children and Young People was passed by the Scottish Parliament last week on its third reading. Acting as an independent voice and making recommendations directly to the Scottish Parliament, the commissioner's role would be to promote and safeguard the interests of children and young people, as well as influencing decision-making at the highest level. Two years ago Wales became the first UK country to appoint a children's commissioner, and a recruitment campaign is currently underway for the post in Northern Ireland. Last month the Children's Rights Alliance launched a major campaign for a commissioner in England that is being backed by 120 organisations.
