Practitioners may find opening up an activity focusing on imagination will catch children from outside the original group, says Jane Drake Observation in setting

Paris (three years nine months) was observed playing outside with two friends as they pretended to prepare for and eat a picnic. They had brought plastic plates from the indoor home corner, but Paris decided that they would make 'sandwiches' using leaves and soil. She put one leaf on her plate and, using a twig as a 'knife', she spread soil on the leaf saying, 'That's mine - it's tuna and salad cream - that's my favourite.' When all three children had prepared their 'sandwiches', Paris suggested they needed drinks, telling the others, 'When we went to the park with my Gran, we took lemonade in a big bottle and cups for everybody.' Looking around, she spotted some plant pots in the garden and gathered up three to use as cups.
