Christine Gilbert will succeed Maurice Smith as Chief Inspector of Schools from 1 October. Ms Gilbert, the former corporate director of education at the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, is married to Tony McNaulty, the police minister. Mr Smith, Ofsted's former director of early years, has held the interim post since December. It is unclear whether he will return to his previous post, which is currently held by Dorian Bradley, also on an interim basis. An Ofsted spokesperson said, 'No arrangement has yet been made with regard to early years.'
