In brief...The introduction of neonatal hearing screening

The introduction of neonatal hearing screening for all babies in Wales is to be considered by a special advisory group, Welsh health minister Jane Hutt said last week. Recent advances in audiology have resulted in a test being developed for newborn babies that will detect hearing impairment, and research shows that an early diagnosis of hearing problems results in much better outcomes for children's social and educational development later on. Ms Hutt told a National Deaf Children's Society conference, 'I am aware of the benefits that this will bring to children with hearing problems and how this will assist them throughout their lives. I intend to establish an expert group to ensure that we are in the best possible position to maximise the introduction of the programme across Wales.'
