The Foundation Stage Profile is the new statutory assessment for children reaching the end of the foundation stage. It will replace statutory baseline assessment from September this year.

The Foundation Stage Profile consists of a handbook, video, CD-Rom and a booklet. The Profile will supply teachers with case studies and exemplification.

The Profile is not a test. There are no assessment activities or tasks.

Practitioners will continue to carry out formative assessment by assessing each child's development in relation to the early learning goals that form part of the curriculum guidance for the foundation stage.

The Foundation Stage Profile is structured as a set of 13 assessment scales, each of which has 9 points. The first three points of each scale describe a child who is working below the early learning goals.
