Inspection just luck

I totally understand the reasons for Ofsted inspections and would not wish to see them removed, but I agree with Olive Rack (Letters, 1 March) Although we came out 'good' and 'satisfactory' in our recent inspection, I find it totally unacceptable that inspectors' findings are based on what they see on one day. The inspector came for two days, but said that as we know they are coming on the second day, her findings from then are disregarded! We had two extremely nervous new staff members, but we ran the session as normal, allowing one of the inexperienced staff members to take circle time as planned. She was nervous and forgot to do the letter of the week, or get the children to count how many were in, which is something we normally do every day.

She was nervous and forgot to do the letter of the week, or get the children to count how many were in, which is something we normally do every day.

We did have sequencing cards out on the table where an adult was leading an activity. We were also counting blocks as the children were building, and we sat talking at snack time and had lots of activities going on involving literacy and mathematics. But because we did not cover these areas at circle time, it was put on the report that we do not cover literacy or mathematics and therefore the children are not being extended in these areas. We were gobsmacked! On the second day the areas were covered in circle time as well as during the activities and the inspector said that we did well, but this would not be covered in her report!
