Inspectors left to waste

Registered general nursery inspectors have had no say in the workings of Ofsted's new Early Years Directorate, despite our heavy involvement in improving the educational aspect of early years education.

There are about 700 registered nursery inspectors in England and Wales, and around 300 of them, like me, work full-time. Most of us are qualified teachers or have worked many years in pre-school education. We are trained to inspect all pre-school groups, including playgroups and nurseries, in England and Wales which claim Government funding to provide up to five free sessions a week for four-year-old children, and increasingly for three-year-olds. The purpose is to ensure all funded children are given an appropriate pre-school education covering the Early Learning Goals.
