Jayden has just completed his first year in Key Stage 1 at Ashbrow Community Nursery and Infant School, Kirklees. Foundation Stage teacher Fiona Cullivan Ward recalls that Jayden joined their unit having attended sessions of 'Stay and Play' at the children's centre.

Jayden was a quiet child who needed nurturing to gain confidence during transition to a bigger and more complex environment. During his year in nursery, detailed tracking and observations by key staff noted his love of the outdoors and his preference to learn there.

As he entered reception, Jayden had established friendships with other children and good relationships with adults, but still lacked the confidence to lead his own learning. The staff decided to ensure all learning was reflected indoors and out, to help both Jayden and the many other children who find the outdoors a comfortable and exciting learning environment.
