Chances are that the mother you work for has at some time belonged to the National Childbirth Trust, attending its ante-natal classes or mum & baby coffee mornings. The NCT is keen to tell us that nannies are also welcome to join - in fact, membership is free to nannies if their employer belongs too. You could then add coffee mornings and other get-togethers to your social life, or if these seem just too mother-dominated, use the local NCT newsletter to find out the places and events you can go to with a baby in tow. The NCT also offers nearly-new sales, product catalogues, books and a quarterly magazine. Members can train as ante-natal teachers, breastfeeding counsellors or post-natal leaders - perhaps the first step on a career path, especially into the health service, for a nanny who's had her own child. For information about the NCT or advice on babycare, phone 0870 444 8708.
