Juggling act wins student top prize

Jamie-Lee Coldham is the first part-time circus student, as well as the first male, to win the Heinemann and Nursery World Childcare Student of the Year Award. With a record number of entries, the judges deliberated over four finalists and finally chose Jamie-Lee, who turns 17 next month and is studying for a CACHE Diploma in Child Care and Education (DCE) at Blackpool and Flyde College.

His tutor, Lesley McCartney, nominated him because she said it had been evident from day one that he was ideally suited to a career in childcare.

'Jamie-Lee is an extremely mature lad and he's got such an insight into what children need. He has a really gentle way of coaxing them into doing things. He's very much a team member on the course, involving himself and supporting the other 18 students.'
