It comes after a cross government department consultation on proposals to further restrict less healthy food and drink adverts on TV and online.

With its consultation response, the Government states, ‘Coming to government this year we have been clear at the core of our health mission that we must take bold action to address the childhood obesity crisis, which includes banning the advertising of junk food to children.’

From next October (2025), a new 9pm watershed will be introduced for less healthy food and drink advertising on TV, including all on-demand programme services (ODPS) under the jurisdiction of the UK - regulated by Ofcom.

As part of its action to tackle childhood obesity, the Government has also committed to banning the sale of high caffeine energy drinks to under-16s.
