Leadership award for head

A headteacher who developed her nursery school into a thriving children's centre has won a prestigious teaching award.

Laura Brodie, head of Allens Croft Children's Centre in Birmingham,scooped the 2008 National College for School Leadership (NCSL) Award forHeadteacher of the Year in a primary school in the West Midlands.

Judges for the award described her work at the centre as 'somethingtotally unique and rare'.

Ms Brodie has been at the nursery school for more than ten years andoversaw the move to a children's centre in 2005 after integratingunder-threes into the provision in 2001.

Ms Brodie said, 'We were a bit ahead of our time. I'm glad we saw theneed 12 years ago and got to build it gradually. To me, the nurseryschool is the children's centre, and vice versa. Education is at thecore of everything we do.'
