'Let staff move freely between age groups'

* Children in Scotland is calling for the Scottish Executive to review the barriers between early years services, schools and youth projects. The charity has sent notes from a conference it organised last week to the Executive suggesting that particularly in light of the introduction of community schools, flexibility in education between age groups should be introduced with teacher training allowing for greater mobility between services.

Delegates at the conference in Edinburgh, 'Helping Children Learn: qualifications and training', heard about Sweden's model for integrated initial training for teachers and social pedagogues. Barbara Martin Korpi, Ministry of Education and Science senior advisor in Sweden, said everyone training to teach or care for children has a common core of 18 months training. Pre-school classes and 'leisure time centres' are located close to schools so staff from different settings can work in teams to address care and development alongside learning.
