LibDems pledge free childcare

The Liberal Democrats say they would give all families 20 hours of free, high-quality childcare and up to one year of paternity leave for fathers.

The party's spring conference last weekend backed proposals thatincluded providing 19 months' paternity leave, shared between bothparents; 20 hours of free childcare a week between the ages of 18 monthsand five years; ensuring all childcare workers are qualified to aminimum of NVQ Level 3; and expanding the role of children's centres toprovide more outreach.

A motion also called for 'childcare workers to be trained in SpecialEducational Needs to ensure learning difficulties are identified andaddressed at an early age'.

Susan Kramer, Liberal Democrat MP for Richmond Park, said, 'Findingchildcare that fits around family needs can be a real struggle forparents and the need for flexible and affordable childcare has neverbeen more urgent.
