Lone fathers find mutual support

Anew project in a deprived area of Edinburgh is aiming to support the parents who may be the most likely to slip through the care net -single fathers. Run collaboratively by One Parent Families Scotland and Gilmerton Children's Centre, the Lone Fathers project will run outings for fathers and children to venues such as adventure playgrounds and swimming pools. It has attracted about 3,500 Sure Start funding, which project worker Jimmy Donald described as 'phenomenal'.

Mr Donald said, 'Everything will be provided free. Hopefully, the kids and the father will have fun together and he won't have to think about how much it's going to cost to have a hotdog and a can of Coke.'

The group will be aimed at both fathers bringing up children on their own and 'contact' fathers who do not live with their child, usually after a relationship has broken down.
