Playing in the home corner, Lauren (four years three months) stirs a spoon in a bowl and places the bowl in the oven as Callum (three years two months) watches. When a practitioner asks what she is making, she replies 'Birthday cake! It's your birthday! Do you want some?' The practitioner says yes and asks about the ingredients. 'It's sugar and chocolate and flour. When it's cooked, you and Callum can have some... It's cooked now!'

Lauren pretends to give both a piece. 'Don't touch it! It's hot! Ouch! I'll give you a spoon'. She sets out two spoons and two plates and scoops 'cake'
