Lots to offer to childminders

By Chris Evans, network officer at the National Childminding Association I was sorry to read about a childminder's experiences on applying to join a childminding network that made her believe networks had nothing to offer her in the future ('Unwelcoming club', Letters, 4 December). Any previous experience that newly registered childminders can bring from working with children in another setting is welcome. But childminding is unique because of its home-based setting, which means that much of the practice and challenges for new childminders are faced in the first few months. New childminders may not yet have any children in place and want some 'settling in' time for themselves - let alone the children they will be caring for - before embarking on network assessment.

If the network you approached for membership is a Children Come First (CCF) network, you would have to undertake an assessment to the standards in the NCMA's Quality Childminding Charter before being accepted. Many of these networks are able to work with newly registered childminders and to develop their service to quality-assured standards, but some can't, because initial development work with newly registered childminders is designated to local authority staff.
