Make a splash

Thinking back to my own childhood, my strongest memories of a fascination with colour come from my much beloved paint box. Words like Burnt Umber, Yellow Ochre, Crimson and Ultramarine were not only printed on the box of paints, but were also rolled round my mouth as I savoured the sound of them, contemplating their origin and meaning. Who chooses the names for colours? Equally fascinating was my box of coloured pencils, which I used to sort regularly by shade of colour, organising my own private rainbow in a tin and gaining a deep sense of satisfaction at the same time. This topic is intended to invoke the same kind curiosity and excitement about the notion of colour in both practitioners and children. The activities have been devised with the aim of making the ordinary seem extraordinary, and of encouraging both adults and children to contemplate the way that colour impacts upon our lives, in a huge variety of ways.
