Make it clear to all

We were angered and outraged by Denise Hoggetts' comments in her letter 'Put it into practice' (13 February) about people who train on work placements. Both of us have had very different training - one a BTec, the other an NVQ - yet we feel that we are both as competent as each other. With regard to the death of the five-month-old baby Thomas Egan, we feel that training status is not as relevant as good communication between staff.

In our setting we have many students and part-time staff who, as soon as they come into the setting, are all made fully aware of any children who have allergies. We also have a chart showing all the children and what they are allergic to. This chart is filled out every morning, so we hope there is never any chance that anything could be given to children that they are allergic to, accidentally or otherwise.
