Mark of approval

The Government's Childcare Approval Scheme for nannies is catching on, unlike the Home Childcarer scheme it replaced, as figures from the Department for Education and Skills show. By the end of September this year the number of approvals made was 3,139 (with 248 of them renewals), and a further 1,117 new and renewing applications were being processed. That's a big rise from the 1,339 approvals announced by children's minister Beverley Hughes last January. The growth still appears to be driven by parents seeking to subsidise their childcare costs - nobody's counting how many nannies go for approval before being asked to.
