School dinners made a reappearance in the news last week as Cherie Blair joined her husband on the campaign trail. The Daily Telegraph reported that during a visit to World's End infant and nursery school in Quinton, Birmingham, where she praised the broccoli and sprouts, Mrs Blair revealed that she was less than impressed with the food at her son's school and was 'seriously considering' giving five-year-old Leo packed lunches. Despair over the quality of school meals led one father to write in to The Times. He wrote that a letter from his daughter's primary school in Essex had said, 'Change to the school menu - in response to recent publicity, Turkey Twizzlers have been taken off the school menu and replaced by Chicken Teddies.'

It was thought that exposure to other children's common infections helps strengthen the immune system.
