The NVQ in Children's Care, Learning and Development (CCLD), Levels 2, 3 and 4 reflect the breadth of expertise present in the field of working with children from birth to 16. This may be a shock, perhaps, to those more used to focusing on birth to eight years as an age range. However, a closer look at the new standards reveals that candidates, at all levels, are only being asked to demonstrate competence with the age group with which they normally work. They are not being asked to work with all age ranges. Essentially the award requires them to demonstrate that they know and understand 'a basic outline of the expected pattern of children's development' (National Occupational Standards in Children's Care, Learning and Development 2005) in each of the age groups: birth to three years, three to seven years, seven to 12 years and 12 to 16 years.
