This, I feel, is discrimination. Nurseries should ensure they have a clear policy on protecting children against abuse, so those employing a mixed workforce treat everyone the same. As an NNEB working in a special needs school, I am fortunate that my school's policy implements common sense in these areas, such as ensuring that all staff and children are protected from allegations.
Why should male carers not pick up a child who wants a hug? Why should we leave a child in a wet or dirty nappy until a female member of staff is free? Men shouldn't have to put up with these questions on a daily basis.
There is still a great deal of stigma when it comes to males working in childcare, but if we want to create a new generation of well-balanced adults, we must stop allowing a small number of sick-minded individuals to spoil the small amount of progress that we have made.
