Men in training

The challenges that prospective childcarers and teachers can face often begin in training. Some students have found placements daunting. Elizabeth Burn, a tutor in primary teaching and doctoral student at London Metropolitan University researching men in early years, says, 'Men felt that both during training, and while teaching, there was a certain amount of "male bashing" and they had no choice but to accept it, to keep their heads down. Some men I interviewed were very angry about this, but felt powerless to object.

'One man told me he walks around at lunchtime to avoid the staff room.

Others have to cope with the women flirting with them. One student on a placement described how he was set up on a blind date. The women staff turned up at the wine bar where he was waiting and laughed at him. It was awful.'
