Microsoft shut chat rooms

The NSPCC has welcomed last week's decision by computer giant Microsoft to shut down all of its internet chatroom services in the UK to protect children from adult abusers. The NSPCC's internet safety expert Chris Atkinson described it as 'a very positive step forward (that would) help close a major supply line for sex abusers who go to great lengths to gain access to innocent children by grooming them on the internet'. But Paul Burstow MP, Liberal Democrat spokesman for children, who is also a member of the Home Office Internet Child Protection Task Force, expressed concern about the move. He said it was not going to protect children from paedophiles. Mr Burstow said, 'There is a real risk that children will switch to chatrooms that are even less safe. Rather than bailing out, Microsoft should be taking steps to ensure that chat is safe. There are many practical steps that can be taken, from moderated chat to filtering.'
