New safeguards for children on internet

Plans for a new centre to combat internet child abuse were unveiled last week, along with new guidelines for parents and carers aimed at keeping children safe when searching the internet and using chatrooms. The guide by the Home Office Internet Task Force acknowledges that while searching for information on the internet grows in popularity, one of the risks for children is that they may find material that is offensive or illegal.

The guide by the Home Office Internet Task Force acknowledges that while searching for information on the internet grows in popularity, one of the risks for children is that they may find material that is offensive or illegal.

A survey last year, UK Children Go Online, found that while 60 per cent of nine- to 19-year-olds view the internet as the most useful tool for homework information, 20 per cent of them worry about seeing things that are upsetting.

The guide gives tips on safer searching, information on why users see the results they do when they carry out an internet search, advice on safety filters, and search providers aimed specifically at children. There are also recommendations for service providers on what they can do to make using the internet as safe as possible for children.
