Ministers go to work on play

Children's play in the UK looks set to benefit from 200m of investment by the New Opportunities Fund following the completion of a wide-ranging cross-departmental review. The review, launched last week, will last between six and eight months and its findings will determine the Government's strategy on children's play that will feed into the planned policy directions for the New Opportunities Fund.

The Fund has earmarked 200m for play initiatives across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland once the review is completed.

The review is being led by Tim Gill, director of the Children's Play Council, who has been seconded to the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, which is co-ordinating the review with the Department for Education and Skills. It is being chaired by Frank Dobson, former health secretary.
