Mixed reaction to guidance on school trips

14 August 2002

Teaching unions have given a mixed reaction to guidance on school trips issued by the Department for Education and Skills. It is proposed that schools appoint a named member of staff as an educational visits co-ordinator, although this does not mean funding a new post. In addition, LEAs are to appoint outdoor education advisers to oversee visits. NASUWT deputy general secretary Chris Keates said the guidance was 'welcome and helpful' but the appointment of co-ordinators was 'ill conceived'. National Association of Head Teachers leader David Hart said the guidance risked 'creating excessive bureaucracy and red tape'. The guidance is available on www.dfes.gov.uk.
