More than 700 extra teachers recruited to work in Scotland's schools and pre-schools in the past year

More than 700 extra teachers have been recruited to work in Scotland's schools and pre-schools in the past year, according to statistics from a census conducted in Scotland in September 2005. The figures show that there were 52,179 teachers based in schools and pre-schools in 2005 - an increase of 710 from the previous year and up 1,053 from 2003. The Scottish Executive said that the figures mean that it will meet its target of 53,000 teachers overall in 2007.
