The present generation of young children must be hearing the most richly diverse musical diet of any generation yet - just think of the wealth of music and how easily it is available to listen to in all moments of our life.
At a young age, children are more 'open-eared' to all kinds of music and haven't yet begun to associate certain kinds of music with certain kinds of cultural or social identity. So, this is a good age to introduce them to music that is widely representative of cultural diversity.
Ideally, settings will plan to introduce a wide variety of music, by borrowing regularly from a library, using funds to buy a collection and/or taking advantage of staff members' and parents' music collections. Ask parents to bring in a CD that is representative of their family, and play it at a key moment in the session during the course of a week.
