Musical award

Come and Play, the national music-making initiative for out-of-school clubs, has been awarded 582,454 from Lottery-funded charity Youth Music to continue its work for a third year. Come and Play, which is run by 4Children, plans to reach 10,000 children in 47 disadvantaged areas throughout the UK by the end of the three years. The programme targets primary school children who have had little access to music services or the formal music education system.

Expert musicians run workshops at out-of-school clubs on rhythm, sound, tempo, styles, instruments and music from different cultures, also aiming to develop children's self-esteem, respect, integration and teamwork.

Anne Longfield, chief executive of 4Children, said, 'This level of extra funding from Youth Music gives everyone cause for great celebration. Come and Play has proven to be a great success in helping children who don't feel so confident learning in a more formal school setting. We hope and expect that music will continue within the children's clubs and that these clubs will have the knowledge and expertise to be able to offer similar experiences in future years.'
