Faced with challenges to the sustainability of the private and voluntary sector, some of the biggest nursery chains in England are joining forces to carry out a large-scale review of how they can play a greater role in the ten-year childcare strategy.

Following a meeting last week of some of the largest chains in the UK, the group now working as the Major Providers Group has asked Steve Alexander, chief executive of the Pre-School Learning Alliance (pictured), to chair the review.

The Alliance is the largest voluntary sector provider of children's centres. Because of its 'diverse membership' of nurseries and pre-schools, Mr Alexander said, this role was a natural extension to representing the sector. He told Nursery World that the aim was to look at finding solutions to some of the issues that have recently beset private and voluntary providers.
'We don't want to be soft . We will be a critical pressure group for change,' he said.
