New nursery steps in to fill the gap

A former childminder has started a new nursery offering much-needed childcare places to children who had nowhere to go after a university nursery closed down.

Lorraine Cato decided to open the Little Angels Nursery in Gate- acre,Liverpool, following protests over the planned closure of the nursery atLiverpool Hope University's Childwall Campus.

Little Angels opened a month ago, just a few yards down the road fromthe university's former nursery in the parish hall of St Stephen'sChurch, Gateacre.

The deputy manager is Sandra Leny, who used to work at the campusnursery and led the protest against its closure.

Ms Leny was one of 24 staff who lost their jobs after the universitynursery closed in July, because it was considered no longer viable tooperate. Just 12 children of student parents attended, with otherchildren coming from the local community.
