The Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA) has designed a series of national occupational standards for teaching assistants working with children aged five to 14, which are currently being finalised and will be posted on the QCA's website this autumn. Schools can then begin to use them for internal performance appraisal and for drawing up job descriptions.
The national standards will link in to both NVQ 2 and NVQ 3 for teaching/classroom assistants available across the UK apart from Scotland, which will have equivalent SVQ qualifications. Training will be provided by a range of major awarding bodies, who are currently preparing detailed bids on how they plan to deliver the qualifications.
