A toolkit designed by national school grounds charity Learning Through Landscapes aims to help early years settings improve their outdoor spaces for play and learning.

LTL says its PlayOut guide is the first of its kind to help thoseinvolved with improving the use, design and management of outdoorspaces. PlayOut includes two books, Preparing the Ground and CreatingChanges, which provide step-by-step advice on project management, a DVDcalled 'Outdoors for Everyone', a CD-Rom and case study cards andposters.

The toolkit aims to inspire settings with examples of good practice, providing templates, resources and tips to save time and money. It alsoincludes links for curriculum planning and ways to engage children inthe process.

Annie Davy, early years development advisor at LTL and PlayOutcontributor, said, 'Early years practitioners understand the importanceof the outdoors to young children's learning and development. However, planning and making the first steps to improve their outdoor spaces canfeel overwhelming, on top of everything else staff are expected todo.

'PlayOut has been designed to provide practical, fun and manageablesolutions to plan, use and maintain improvements to any early yearsoutdoor environment, making it a better place for stimulating andenjoyable play and learning.'
