Not as old as all that

Your letter of the week about having grandmothers on the nursery staff (Nursery World, 13 January) raised a laugh in our office on a Friday afternoon, but it also made my blood boil. What blatant stereotyping! I am a grandmother and yes, I knit and I can play dominoes, but I'd hope to bring a lot more to my granddaughter's playgroup than that.

I am a grandmother and yes, I knit and I can play dominoes, but I'd hope to bring a lot more to my granddaughter's playgroup than that.

I would be mortally offended if the staff asked me about my penny-farthing bicycle or to sing songs from the war (although I do know the words of 'Show me the way to go home').

I do hope the prize of 30 worth of children's books will portray energetic, imaginative and confident grandparents to counter the stereotypes Ms Reid has promoted in her setting.
