Not just at holidays

It was encouraging to read the article on Diwali and how children can use the festival to learn about this celebration. However, in addition, we feel there is a need for all practitioners to recognise and understand the importance of including the people whose festivals we are celebrating, not only at such particular times. Including people of a variety of faiths, ethnicities and cultures on a regular ongoing basis in all aspects of our practice and resources enables young children to understand and accept differences as a positive and valued reality of our society. In this way they are less likely to perceive those who are different from themselves as 'exotic' and not really part of our society.
