Centres launched

Two children's centres have opened in Chesterfield, Derbyshire, atBrampton and Holme Hall primary schools. Services include drop-insessions for parents, offering advice on childcare, family support andhealth.

- MP guest appearance

Parents and children enjoyed a fun-packed open day at the launch of anew children's centre in Redditch, Worcestershire, attended by local MPand Home Secretary, Jacqui Smith. Circus skills, balloon modelling andsports activities were all on offer at Redditch YMCA's Willow TreesChildren's Centre. Children from local primary schools, after-schoolclubs and the YMCA's pre-school nursery created themed canvases andpictures to appear around the children's centre.

Certified doulas

Ten students from Eastleigh College, Hampshire were presented withcertificates by the college's chief executive Tony Lau-Walker, aftercompleting the first officially recognised national qualification forbirthing partners, or doulas. A doula is a non-medical practitioner whosupports parents during and immediately after childbirth, whether athome or in hospital. Laura Davies from Baby on Board Doulas, whodeveloped the CACHE level 3 Doula qualification, said, 'It is importantthat parents know their doulas are properly trained and experienced insupporting them during the most exciting time of their lives - the birthof their children.'
