Matrix of quality

The Community Access Childcare and Early Years team in the Londonborough of Enfield have received recognition for delivering qualityservices to local families and childcare professionals. They wereawarded the Matrix standard, which is the quality standard forinformation, advice and guidance services that is awarded to those whodemonstrate that they involve their clients and work with partners todeliver continually improving provision. Acting head of service SandieGardner said, 'As a service committed to putting Enfield families first,we knew that we had to talk to parents and childcare providers andlisten to their views. We found that by joining up our services into oneintegrated team we were in a stronger position to respond to their needsand provide advice, guidance and training.'

Graduate leaders

Children from St Mark's Pre-School in Exeter who are starting primaryschool in September celebrated the end of term with a party andgraduation ceremony (pictured). Pre-school leader Jude Green said, 'Wewould like to thank the parents for all their support and wish thechildren all the very best in their new schools. They are fantasticchildren and the pre-staff and the younger children will miss them allvery much.'

A day at the races

The 'yellow team' cheer on their members in one of the races held at thefamily fun day at First Place Day Nursery in Radlett, Hertfordshire(pictured). Children joined in spoon and potato races and used theirbalancing skills to run with trays and cups of water. They raised 250 from the proceeds of the books and sweets stall and donated some ofthe funds to the Make-A-Wish Foundation for children withlife-threatening illnesses.

Celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, the Variety Club's EasyRiders scheme has provided more than 3,270 sports and non-sportswheelchairs to disabled children.

The scheme provides buggies, trikes, motorised and manual wheelchairswith lightweight frames that may be easier for a child to use thanstandard wheelchairs. Pamela Sinclair, chair of the Easy Riderswheelchair committee, said, 'The Variety Club is all too aware of thegrowing need from disabled children and their families for adequatemobility support. In this celebratory year, we are looking to activelyincrease the number of applicants we receive and our aim is to ensurethat children throughout the country have access to the most appropriateequipment that will give them as independent a life as possible.'
