- Police calling

Children at Busy Bees in St Albans, Hertfordshire, marked Child SafetyWeek on 21-27 June with a visit from a fireman, policeman and policecommunity support officer. The children learned about fire safety in thehome and how to identify safety equipment.

- Great outdoors

Little Bears Day Nursery in Weston Super Mare officially opened its newoutdoor area last week. The garden, which was completed in May, wasfunded with money from the Early Years Capital Grant. It enables thechildren to enjoy more free-flow play and includes a den, storytellingarea, sand pit and water play. Meanwhile the inside of the nursery hasalso been transformed with a lick of paint, new floors, furniture andresources.

- Spuds for lunch

Children at Redhill Day Nursery in Bournemouth harvested their firstcrop of potatoes from the nursery's allotment. After pulling the spudsfrom the ground, the children helped staff to clean them and preparethem to be cooked for lunch.

- Rhymes on show

Children at Early Years Childcare in Crawley, Sussex, sang a selectionof nursery rhymes to parents and visitors last month. Staff said theevent was organised to develop the children's love of rhyme and patternsof language, as well as put on a great show for parents.

- Books for bears

Portico Day Nursery at Moss Bank Children's Centre in St Helens,Merseyside, organised its own Bear Week at the setting. Manager SarahFillingham said, 'The highlight of the week was a visit from theBookstart Bear, who presented the three-year-olds with BookstartTreasure Chests.'

- Meet the Minibeasts

Children at Blaenavon Hillside Nursery School in Pontypool, Gwent,donned their wet weather gear and wellies to learn all about minibeastsin the nursery's new play area during National Insect Week, 21-27 June.The discovery play area, designed by school grounds specialistPlayforce, includes planters, a special plant area and a wormery.

- Outstanding girls

Durham High School for Girls held an open morning for the FoundationStage children to celebrate being rated outstanding in all aspects ofits provision. The event was attended by the Mayor and Mayoress ofDurham, councillor Mac Williams and representatives from the NHS andNorth East Chamber of Commerce, as well as parents, staff andgovernors.

It was safety first at Stepping Stones Montessori nursery in Poole,Dorset, as children practised how to stop, look and listen beforecrossing a road during Child Safety Week, 21-27 June. They also carriedout a risk assessment of the garden and learned about fire safety.
