Nursery activities

Come rain or shine, the children of Linthwaite Clough Junior, Infant and Early Years School in Huddersfield don their wellies and go in search of the wonders of the outside world Jumping in puddles or watching frogs is a fun part of childhood. But when the children put on their wellies, eager to ramble through brambles and listen to nature, they are also partaking in a valuable learning experience, which fulfils many aspects of the Foundation Stage curriculum. We walk in a conservation area close to school. There are woody areas with boggy ground, brambles and a pond where frogs and tadpoles live.

We walk in a conservation area close to school. There are woody areas with boggy ground, brambles and a pond where frogs and tadpoles live.

We provide six pairs of wellies, which are always ready and waiting by the door. They are suitable for children from the ages of three to five so that the groups are always mixed aged, which promotes peer support. We go on walks twice a week, but if the frogs are out and the leaves falling we might go every day.

We encourage the children to look at the natural environment and observe the changing seasons. Listening to the sounds of nature is calming and the children respond through touch and sound - whispering to each other, pointing things out, sharing, holding hands and providing mutual support.
