Nursery children get down to earth

Pre-school children are leap frogging to university with a series of one-hour classes aiming to get them interested in the environment and natural history. The University of Aberdeen's zoology department is offering children a different topic each month where they can learn about trees, seeds, butterflies, pond life, rainforests, spiders, owls and the seashore.

Mandy Tulloch, development co-ordinator at the department, said the programme was set up to meet a demand for fun, educational activities. 'We have always done general visits for nursery children, but for the last two summers we have had a pre-school week of events and they were so popular,'

she said.

'We aim to allow children to explore subjects not always available to them.

Caring and respect towards the environment also feature prominently.'
