Nursery nurses are the odd ones out

I am one of eight nursery nurses working in nursery, reception and Year 1 in a school in Southport, Merseyside. Five of us are being made redundant at the end of this month due to the current shortfall in school funding. We are one of the many schools being hit by the cuts. A school near us has had to cut its NNEBs from two to one. The same day we were told of our redundancies all the teachers were given their own laptop computers. Many thousands of pounds are also being spent on school buildings, while teachers' wages are soaring and our school has had to find an extra 8,000 for its national insurance bill - and all that's money not being spent on NNEBs.

Classroom assistants are safe in our school, as they are cheaper due to their lower wages and term-time- only contracts. One governor has even said the school could employ three classroom assistants for the cost of one nursery nurse, so why employ an NNEB?
