Nursery World Awards 2008: Organisations - Foundation Stage Unit of the Year

HIGHLY COMMENDED: Birchfield Community School, Aston, Birmingham

Birchfield Community School is a large setting, providing 'outstanding'care and education for 60 children full time in its nursery unit and 54part-time in their pre-school unit, as well as three reception classesof 30 pupils each.

The school's aim is to steer children in the right direction so theybecome independent, motivated learners. This is achieved with meticulousplanning and strong inclusive practice, and most importantly, involvingparents in their children's learning.

One part of this commended Foundation Stage practice is Birchfield's useof heritage languages within the day to day delivery of the curriculum.Parents often get involved in these sessions, with their views becominga key part of the assessment process and leading to them setting theirchild's personal targets.
